By Mr Zhou Oxford English for Grade 9 I. Analysis of the Teaching Materials: This lesson is a reading passage. It is about how to communicate with other people with our body language, Body language is used by people for sending messages to one another. It is very useful because it can help you make yourself easily understood. II. Students’ characteristic. The Junior 3 has been learning English for several years and having some basic knowledge, so they can understand this article. By studying this article, Ss can improve their reading ability, learn more about the body language. III. Teaching Aims and Demands 1.Knowledge objectives a. To enable the students to read, to spell , to understand the vocabulary correctly. b. To help the students ask and answer the new phrases. 2.Ability objectives. a. to get a general idea of the reading passage. b. to fill out information gap about body language. 3.Emotion objectives a. To train the Ss to cooperate well in groups and in pairs. b. To be interested in communicating in English. IV. Teaching Key Points . Key vocabulary: part-time job, glance at, hesitate, greet, sign, prefer,communicate, gesture ,expression, appearance, impression,rest head on hand… 2. Key structures: what’s up/what’s the matter /what’s happening? V. Teaching Difficulty There are some difficulties in skimming the story. The usage of some key phrases: Such as: prefer…to… ; look up…… 3. The kinds of body language. VII. Learning Methods 1. Listening—speaking method 2. Communicative strategy VI. Teaching Methods Task-based method Communication method VIII. Teaching Aids Multi-media, blackboard, a recorder . IX. Teaching Procedure Step 1. Warming up An English Song “ If you are happy” Step 2. Pre-reading Go over the new words. Step3. Pre-instruction: a.What the common ways we use to exchange information with others are? Utterance (spoken words)… (P2. Ex..A) 1. anger 2. disappointment 3. sadness 4. surprise b. Do you have any idea of body language? c. Can you tell the moods from different facial expressions? a b d. Here are some more facial expressions. Look at them and tell the moods. fearful happy sad angry e. Gesture is also an important way of body language. Look at the gestures on the pictures and tell their meanings. Well-done stop quiet victory! Step 4. Skim the story a. Go through Ex B1 and skim the story to answer the questions. (Get individuals to answer the questions.) What is the main topic of the story? Where are Debbie and Simon? Who give Simon advice? In the photo, which person looks more friendly, the boy or the girl? b. Skim the story and fill in the blanks (ExB2) I spoke to Mr Young today. He’s one of the (1)_______ Employees at the travel agency. I told him that our customers always prefer to talk to (2)_______.He told me the problem might be the way I (3)_____________. He explained to me about (4) ________ language. He said that my body language was not giving customers a good(5)_________. (pair work) and complete the chart. Name Body language outcome Debbie ……. …… Simon …… …… (sit up and hold head up, make eye contact with the customers, always smile, greet cheerfully) (look friendly, make others feel welcome) (rest head on hand, look downwards, never smile,) (Look unfriendly, make others go away) Now use your own words to describe Debbie or Simon to your deskmate with the help of the table above (pair work). Step 5. More verbal phrases in the text: 1. glance at 2.greet sb. cheerfully 3.sigh 4.prefer…to… 5.make a good impression on sb. 6.rest your head on the hand 7 .hold head up 8.make eye contact with 9.sit up Step 6. Promotion: Ask some students to use his or her body language to act out these verbal phrases and the others speak up the correct phrases. After you have learned the body language ,I’m sure all of you will pay more attention to it in your communication with others. Choose one word or phrase and act it out without speaking. Let the other Ss guess the meaning of the body language. Step 7. Activity Body language differs from culture to culture. Not all members of all cultures behave the same way. We should try to grasp and respect each other’s culture in order to make good communication. Step 8 . Summary 1. Review the verbal phrases 2. Preview the vocabulary and phrases in the text and finish Ex. B2, C1, C2 & D 3. Practise reading and act out the story. Step 9. X.
